I was Marilyn Reed's successor when I joined the Judicial Studies Board (JSB) in 1993, managing an office with staff, and overseeing the JSB's finance. I'd never dealt with finance before and really didn't know where to start. Frankly, I was terrified.  Luckily for me, Alan was the nicest, kindest man you could wish to meet, and as an added bonus, he knew all about keeping accounts. He was so kind to me, teaching me the basics of accounting and finance, and helped me balance the books if I was having problems. I saw Alan and Flores a few times over the following years and it was always a pleasure to see them both. I was very sad to hear of Alan's passing, but will remember his kindness and generosity always. He was a lovely man.
